Industries
Recognized as the industry standard, the DXOMARK Camera score is instrumental in advancing camera technology and the user experience.
Everyone expects their mobile camera to produce high quality images in all situations, all while staying small and light, and affordable. We expect zoomed images to always contain a high level of details; we want every photo of our family and friends to capture the exact moment we intended, and we expect the image to be properly exposed whether taken in bright or even very low light; we even expect the bokeh, the background blur on portraits, to be as good from the smartphone camera as it is from a traditional one.
Smartphone makers continue to face these kinds of challenges and others amid the new technologies and the evolution of usages, expectations and preferences. Many smartphones now come with several camera modules that require more precise calibration and tuning to ensure smooth transitions between sensors and lenses.
Staying competitive in this industry also means having the expertise to deploy new computational imaging technologies such as AI-enhanced image processing because users increasingly expect these features to work smoothly in their smartphones. In short, A combination of factors ranging from optics and sensors to software affects the user experience.
Based on our 15-year-old camera protocol, which evolves with the latest innovations and consumers habits and usages, DXOMARK Camera engineers can provide in-depth analysis at all steps of the development process, from the definition of targets through qualitative studies all the way to evaluating your product performance prior to launch.
DXOMARK camera testing protocol
Reflecting the way users use their device, the DXOMARK Camera protocol evaluates the smartphone image quality based on five key elements: Photo, Video, Zoom, Bokeh, and Preview. Photo and video are evaluated in seven key attributes: Exposure, Color, Autofocus, Texture, Noise, Artifacts and Stabilization.
Each attribute is measured in our laboratory as well as in natural settings. Our experts analyze over 3,000 photos and 2.5 hours of video to assess the results not only of the most common ways consumers use their smartphone cameras, but also of “edge conditions” such as closeup still photography, video zoom attributes, preview zoom smoothness, and preview frame loss. All these elements combined generate an overall camera score, which reflects the level of quality of the user experience. Our camera score is used today by many manufacturers to demonstrate the high camera quality delivered by their product.
Based on this exhaustive and evolving protocol and its set of objective and perceptual metrics, DXOMARK can provide a wide range of products and services, that can be carried out at all steps of the development process, helping you to improve (and prove) the quality of your product.
“Our teams’ goal is to provide end users with the best possible experience with their smartphones. As expectations get higher, we have to push manufacturers to improve their performance. For this, we are constantly developing new testing and analysis methods.”
