Objectives
Image quality is at the core of our expertise and since portraits (friends, family, kids and pets) represent the majority of pictures taken with smartphones*, DXOMARK’s Insights first focus is on skin tone rendering, a major challenge and pain point manufacturers need to address to raise consumers’ satisfaction. The study has been built to understand and analyze users’ perception linked to the skin tone rendering in smartphone photos.
*According to a YouGov-DXOMARK survey conducted in January 2022 by YouGov on behalf of DXOMARK towards representative sample of users across China, USA, Europe and India.
Our research was undertaken to analyze users perception concerning skin tone representation in photographs of themselves and others. Providing manufacturers with an analysis and exhaustive dataset, it will enable manufacturers to shape product development decisions and get closer to their own users’ target preferences in terms of skin tone rendering.
Scope
- Based on the perception of 120 people of various skin tones, age groups, and cultural backgrounds
- Surveyed over a period of one month using a set of several thousand photos of themselves and others taken under different lighting conditions.
